
Former respected Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh passed away today in Lucknow due to sepsis and multi organ failure. He was 89 years old.
A senior BJP leader was undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in the Uttar Pradesh capital since July 4. His condition worsened on Friday, after which he was put on dialysis.

Last month, Prime Minister Modi tweeted that “countless people across India are praying for Kalyan Singh ji’s speedy recovery”.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who met Mr Singh at the hospital earlier today, also condoled his death, describing it as an irreparable loss. His government has declared three days of state mourning and August 23 as a holiday when Singh’s body will be cremated.
Former Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati also expressed grief over his death on Twitter.
Mr Singh was Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, twice – from June 1991 to December 1992 and from September 1997 to November 1999. He also served as the Governor of Rajasthan between 2014 and 2019.
His first term as chief minister is remembered for the demolition of the long-disputed Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on 6 December 1992. The incident sent shock waves across the country and is seen as a milestone in the socio-political history of modern India. The rise of his party BJP.
Mr Singh resigned as chief minister soon after the demolition, while the then President Shankar Dayal Sharma also dismissed the Uttar Pradesh government on the same day. Last year, a Lucknow court had acquitted Mr Singh and others in the case. In an interview to News Channel in 2009, the senior politician vehemently denied any conspiracy behind the demolition.
“There was no conspiracy. It was an affront to the sentiments of crores of Hindus whose aspirations were forcibly suppressed for hundreds of years. We had made all security arrangements,” he said.
